This private, nonprofit agency serving the tri-county area is for individuals who need assistance in mental health and/or recovering from chemical dependency/substance abuse, rape, sexual assault, child sexual abuse and other crisis situations. There is also a youth shelter for runaway, homeless, street, displaced, abused and/or neglected youth, ages 6 through 18. Other programs include HIV Early Intervention, criminal justice alternatives, substance abuse prevention education, rape prevention and awareness programming. Volunteers are always needed to respond to New Hanover County and Brunswick County hospital emergency departments to assist rape victims and their families, to mentor youth staying at the emergency shelter and to assist with answering Crisis Line and First Call for Help Hotlines. A 48-hour training program is provided. Pre-volunteer interview, drug screening, criminal record, DMV and N.C. Health Care Registry checks are required for volunteers. Call (910) 790-0187 for upcoming volunteer training details.
