Founded in 1927 as The Cape Fear Journal, this weekly began as the offspring of R. S. Jervay Printers, founded in 1901, and describes itself as the voice and mirror of the African-American community in New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, Onslow and Columbus counties. The name changed to The Wilmington Journal in the 1940s. It is available each Thursday at news racks throughout the city or by subscription.
