With more than 1300 employees, New Hanover County is one of the largest local employers. Five commissioners govern New Hanover County and appoint a county manager to serve as chief executive officer. The county serves its citizens through nearly 30 departments. In 2011, the US Census estimated the county's population at 206,189. More than 100,000 housing units are estimated to exist here.

All county commission meetings are open to the public, and the county maintains a television channel to provide residents with the convenience of watching county business conducted from their own living rooms. NHCTV can be viewed on Time Warner channel 13 and Charter channel 5. It is also available on the internet.
