Known in England as "a hooligan's game played by gentlemen," the rough and tumble sport of rugby has crossed the sea and become a favorite with Americans as well. In Wilmington the Cape Fear Rugby Club boasts about 100 members and is the six-time Division II state champion. Members play and practice at the club-owned pitch (field) located at Flytrap Downs in Wilmington. The club is always interested in recruiting new players, social members and spectators, and the public is invited to come out and watch. Each July, the club holds its annual Cape Fear Sevens Rugby Tournament at Ogden Park field, off Gordon Road. Considered one of the finest showcases of Sevens Rugby in the United States, the event attracts about 70 teams with 700 to 900 players from all over the world.
