Over the past few years, tennis has grown by leaps and bounds in the Cape Fear area. To help support and promote the sport, the Greater Wilmington Tennis Association (GWTA) was formed. GWTA is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization for all tennis activities in the area, with more than 3,500 active players of all ages and skill levels. In affiliation with the North Carolina chapter of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), GWTA sponsors USTA-sanctioned leagues and events for both adults and juniors. The group also sponsors local clinics, social events, fun tournaments, an after-school tennis program for middle-school children, the Wilmington Adult and Junior Tennis Ladders, tennis programs for children with disabilities, and USA Team Tennis programs for children of all skill levels. Quick Start clinics are offered for children 10 and under. Adult league teams range in level from 2.5 to 5.0 and include men's and women's singles, doubles, mixed doubles, combo league (mixed levels of play) and Super Seniors ages 60 and 70 years young. One of the organization's main projects is to make tennis available to youth through after-school programs and to make tennis available to youth trough after-school programs and to make tennis part of the schools' physical education curricula. Through grants, special events and other funding, GWTA has donated more than $50,000 in tennis equipment to schools and youth organizations. Any USTA member or Wilmington Tennis Ladder (WTL) participant residing in New Hanover, Brunswick or Pender counties is automatically a member of GWTA.
