Named for Capt. John Newland Maffitt, one of the Confederacy's most successful blockade runners, the Capt. Maffitt is a converted World War II Navy launch boat, affording one-hour sightseeing cruises with live historical narration, along the Cape Fear River. Harbor tours leave from 106 South Water St. at "The Barge," for one-hour cruises that first travel up the river to explore undeveloped sections of the Cape Fear River. At the halfway mark, the Maffitt turns around and motors downriver, past Wilmington for a tour of the Port of Wilmington with opportunities to see ships from all over the world. Trips run Monday through Sunday from April to October (weekends only in November). Sunset cruises are available from May through October, Friday and Saturday evenings. Cruise tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 2 to 12. The Capt. Maffitt is available for private charters throughout the year - make sure to inquire about the schedule for their four-hour Black River Nature Cruise.
