Chandler's Wharf
225 S. Water St.
Wilmington, NC 28401

Overlooking the river at the corner of Ann and Water streets, Chandler's Wharf offers appealing shopping and dining opportunities. It began as a ship's chandler office and warehouse in the nineteenth century and was developed by Thomas Henry Wright Jr. in the late 1970s. There was a maritime museum here in the 1970s, and some marine artifacts are still scattered about the grounds including an enormous anchor and other reminders of the complex's origins. The Warehouse shops and office building was purchased in 1986 by the John C. Bullock Jr. family who continue to own and operate it.

Cobblestone streets, plank walkways, attractive landscaping and a gorgeous view of the Cape Fear River are a few of the hallmarks that make shopping at Chandler's Wharf and Chandler's Wharf Warehouse such a pleasant experience. The 5-acre center faces the Cape Fear River and includes restaurants and shops located between Orange Street and Ann Street. It is flourishing with some of Wilmington's most delightful stores including galleries with affordable handcrafted gifts, original paintings, clay sculptures, working artist studios, clothing and antiques. It also boasts two of the city's most appealing restaurants, The Pilot House and Elijah's (see our Restaurants section). Dining in either of these is a pleasure heightened by the option of enjoying your meal on outdoor decks overlooking the river.

Some of the shops at Chandler's Wharf include A Proper Garden, (910) 763-7177, which has everything and more for the garden and gardener; A. Scott Rhodes, (910) 763-6616, a full-service jewelry store specializing in custom design and offering selections in fine diamonds, precious stones, local estate jewelry and designer pieces; and Wilmington Historic Prints.

The remarkable creative gallery scene of Chandler's Wharf's Warehouse lures shoppers inside. River to Sea, (910) 520-2673, exhibits owner Rebecca Duffy's delightfully painted children's pictures and water-related wall hangings, as well as the work of 32 artists of various mediums. Creations by Justine, (910) 763-4545, features the clay masterpieces of nationally renowned sculptress Justine Ferreri who also teaches classes in clay. Artichoke, (910) 763-7305, is a unique women's clothing and accessory store that brings a little bit of Soho to downtown Wilmington.
