A haven for migratory birds, Greenfield Lake is also a popular spot for families. A five-mile walking/biking path encircles the 90-acre lake. Herons, egrets and ducks are regular visitors, as are hawks and cardinals. Keep a lookout for alligators, too. Get a closer look aboard canoes and kayaks for rent at the park. Greenfield Lake is 2 miles south of downtown Wilmington along S. Third Street. Seasonal, guided birding tours of the lake are available for groups of four or more. The cost is $15 per person. Call Cape Fear River Watch at the number above for more information. Their website includes a detailed history of the lake beginning with its construction in the 1700s.
